Introduction
In high-speed metal stamping, downtime is the enemy. When your NC Servo Feeder stops or loses precision, production halts. While Huagong Machinery’s HGS Series is built for durability, regular wear and operational errors can still occur.
This guide provides a systematic analysis of common servo feeder faults and their solutions, helping your maintenance team reduce downtime and restore accuracy quickly.

1. Feeding Accuracy Issues (Inconsistent Length)
Symptom: The feed length varies (e.g., target is 100mm, but actual is 99.8mm or 100.5mm).
This is the most common issue in stamping automation. Before calling for service, check these three factors:
- Pneumatic Pressure Instability:
- Cause: If the air pressure drops below 0.4MPa, the upper roller cannot grip the material tightly, causing slippage.
- Huagong Fix: Ensure the air source is stable. Check for leaks in the cylinder seals.
- Pilot Release Timing (Relaxation):
- Cause: If the feeder releases the material too late, the guide pins in the die cannot align the strip.
- Huagong Fix: Adjust the cam signal on the press. The release should happen before the mold closes (typically around 180°–270° depending on the stroke).
- External Interference:
- Cause: A heavy coil without a loop buffer creates too much tension (drag) for the feeder.
- Huagong Fix: Ensure the decoiler loop control is working so the strip is loose before entering the feeder.
2. Servo Motor Alarms & Overheating
Symptom: The HMI screen displays a servo driver error code, or the motor is hot to the touch.
- Mechanical Jamming:
- Analysis: Check if the straightening rollers are clamped too tight or if foreign debris (metal slugs) is stuck in the gears.
- Solution: Clean the gears and loosen the exit rollers slightly.
- Transmission System Wear:
- Analysis: Broken timing belts or worn synchronous pulleys can cause the motor to overwork.
- Solution: Replace the timing belt and tension it correctly according to the Huagong maintenance manual.
- Instantaneous Overload:
- Analysis: If the stamping speed (SPM) exceeds the feeder’s maximum speed rating.
- Solution: Reduce the press speed or check if the “Feed Angle” setting is too narrow.
3. Material Slippage and Roller Marks
Symptom: The machine feeds, but the material slips backward, or you see visible scratches on the steel strip.
- Oil and Debris:
- Cause: Stamping oil or dust accumulation on the PU or Chrome rollers reduces friction.
- Huagong Fix: Wipe the rollers with kerosene or alcohol. Do not use abrasive sandpaper on chromed rollers.
- Material Burrs:
- Cause: Poor slitting quality of the raw coil leaves burrs on the edge, which damage the roller surface.
- Huagong Fix: Deburr the material tip before loading. If rollers are damaged, they may need re-chroming or replacement.
4. Touch Screen (HMI) & Electrical Failures
Symptom: Screen is blank, buttons don’t respond, or PLC communication errors.
- Loose Connections:
- Check: Vibration from the punch press often loosens the aviation plugs or terminal block screws. Tighten all control cables.
- Power Supply Issues:
- Check: Verify the input voltage. A blown fuse or tripped breaker in the main cabinet is a common, easy-to-fix culprit.
- Proximity Sensor Failure:
- Check: If the machine doesn’t start auto-feeding, check the loop control sensors (photoelectric or touch rod). If they are dirty or misaligned, the machine “thinks” there is no material.
Quick Reference Troubleshooting Table
| Fault Phenomenon | Likely Root Cause | Recommended Action |
| Feeding Error > 0.1mm | Loose Guide Wheel / Brake fade | Adjust side guides; Check servo parameters. |
| Motor Noise / Vibration | Coupling loose / Gear lack of grease | Tighten couplings; Add high-temp grease. |
| No “Auto Start” | E-Stop pressed / Inverter Fault | Reset E-Stop; Check Inverter display. |
| Roller doesn’t lift | Solenoid Valve stuck | Clean or replace the pneumatic solenoid. |
Conclusion
Most NC Servo Feeder faults are caused by lack of maintenance or improper settings rather than hardware failure. By following this checklist, you can solve 90% of issues without waiting for a technician.
